Formed in 1992, the Morgan County Historic
Preservation Society is an organization of historic property owners,
historians, restoration professionals and others from a variety of
backgrounds interested in the preservation of historic buildings and
landscapes in Morgan County, Indiana.
Purpose
The Morgan County Historic Preservation Society works
to promote awareness and appreciation of the rich architectural heritage of
Morgan County by:
- Advocating for the protection of threatened
historic properties
- Sponsoring and initiating nominations of
eligible properties to the National Register of Historic Places
- Supporting and advising property owners in
preservation efforts
- Researching and publicizing historic
resources in Morgan County
- Contracting for the preservation of historic
properties
- Acquiring properties for the purpose of
preservation
- Lobbying on legislative issues affecting
Morgan County’s historic resources
- Sponsoring public programs on preservation
issues
Goals
- Designate historic residential, commercial
and rural districts in Morgan County
- Advocate for the protection of threatened
properties
- Assist property owners in locating
contractors experienced with preservation
- Conduct tours of historic districts
- Conduct tours of individual historic
properties
- Encourage school programs that support local
research and preservation such as oral history interviews that preserve
memories of lost properties
- Endorse and
sponsor research such as One-Room and Two-Room Country Schoolhouses of
Morgan County, Indiana and A Look Back at the Home Lawn Sanitarium, funded
by Indiana
- Heritage Research Grants
- Present local research and preservation
activities at area history and preservation conferences
- Become active in preservation efforts
