Teaching started early in the township. Hiram T. Craig taught as early as 1820 and later classes were taught by Mr. Collins. The first schoolhouse in the county was a log structure built in 1827 at Stott's Creek. The Bible was used for reading and writting was done with goose quill pens. Early school trustees were; Willard Egbert, Fred Sanders, William Adams, Marion Sanders, Steve Cain, Manford St. John, and James Abraham.

Brown School was a brick building used as a church since retirement, at 8240 New Harmony Road. In 1928-29 the teacher was Herman Hedrick and some of his students were Bobby Williams, Harold Cragen, Robert Wampler, Lloyd Deer, Earl Reeves, and Walter Bailey.

Green Township Elementary School was built in 1938 and has had several additions over the years. In 1940, Principal Kenneth Lee, and three teachers supervised 119 students. Green Township is part of the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville and students attend Martinsville Middle and High Schools.
