Lucy Goss School was built on land donated by Sarah Goss and was located on the northeast edge of town. It was a one-room frame structure. In 1917-1918, the teacher was Horace McPhetrick and students were from the families of: Sink, Potter, Hodges, Arthur, Bastin, Hibbard, Alexander, and Baker.
Lingle School was once near the intersection of Vickrey Road (1025W) and Lingle Road, (975W). The land for the school was donated by the Lingle family.
In 1879, all the teachers in the
township were male, taught 140 days per year, and were paid $2.08 per
day. Grades one through eight were taught in Lucy Goss and Lingle
schools. Secondary school students attended Paragon School which
taught high school classes until the 1950s. Graduation ceremonies
were held along with all the other townships in the county, at
Bethany Park, Indiana. Both schools appear to have closed in the
1920s, with students attending classes in Paragon, Indiana after that
time. In 1956, Ray Township consolidated with the Metropolitan
School District of Martinsville . Today
Paragon
Elementary School serves grades K-6 and
grades 7-12 attend Martinsville Middle and High Schools.
