School was reportedly being taught in the area in the 1820's but all details appear to be lost. A log cabin used as a school, in 1834, was one and one-half miles south of Hyndsdale. In 1850 there were six schools in the township and by 1884 there were eight.

The Hyndsdale and Duckworth or Bothwell Schools served the area of Hyndsdale. In 1921, Duckworth and Highrock Schools, in Jefferson Township, consolidated with Hyndsdale. When work on State Road 67 was projected in 1939 the Hyndsdale School was found to be in the path of the highway so it was demolished. Jefferson Township is part if the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville and students attend Paragon Elementary School and Martinsville Middle and High Schools.
BIOGRAPHIES
JOHN BAIN was born October 13, 1806 and immigrated from County Caithness, Scotland to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1827. John came to the United States in 1828 and in 1848 moved to Indiana near Martinsville. He was the father of eleven children, James G., William G., Mary C., John E., Charles F., Benjamin F., Emma E., Emma, Alfred M., Henry and Harvey. From 1841 to 1855 John Bain was married to Bridget (Gallagher) Bain. In 1859, after Bridget's death, he married Mrs. Bethsheba Abbot. He died September 24, 1872.
WILLIAM G. BAIN was born in Morgan County, Indiana on August 23, 1846, to John and Bridget (Gallagher) Bain. William was educated in Richmond, Indiana. From July 1862 to March 1863 he served in Company H, Seventieth Indiana Volunteers, and in 1867 was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Morgan County. In 1869 he briefly owned an interest in the Martinsville Flour Mills but soon went back to farming. October 25, 1869 he married Mary E. Hynds, daughter of William and Susanna Hynds. Mary died February 11, 1874 leaving two children, Lillie B. and John E. October 25, 1877 William married Laura J. Yeager, daughter of William and Sarah Yeager. She was born July 18, 1851 and bore him two children, Maudie E., and Mary E. Mr. Bain was elected Morgan County Auditor for one term in 1878.
DAVID BOTHWELL was born in Ireland June 9, 1815, son of Hugh and Ann J. (Gordon) Bothwell. David immigrated to America in 1841, returned to Ireland in 1846, settled in New Orleans in 1852 and then moved to Jefferson Township, Indiana. April 8, 1855 he married Letitia Wilson, born in Ireland to Robert and Jane Wilson. Ann J., Hugh H., John J., Mary, David, Charles, William, and Andrew were their children.
WILLIAM A. CUNNINGHAM was born in Morgan County, Indiana, January 13, 1847, the son of William N. and Nancy (Lankford) Cunningham. On November 10, 1867, William married Mary J. Dittemore of Owen County, Indiana. Mary was the daughter of George and Margaret Dittemore and was born January 6, 1850. William and Mary were the parents of Emma J., Laura E., Edward, and Benjamin F. They farmed 445 acres.
CAPTAIN WILLIAM A. DILLEY was born in Darke County, Ohio on January 7, 1840, of Arthur M. and Elizabeth (McInturf) Dilley. William Dilley enlisted in Company K, Seventh Indiana Volunteers on April 20, 1861. He was promoted through the ranks to Captain of Company A, 33rd Indiana Volunteers and served until July 21, 1865. During his enlistment he was wounded at Thompson's Station in 1863 and was a prisoner at Libby Prison for one month. In 1866 he settled in Jefferson Township with his wife Lucy A. (Dane) Dilley. They were the parents of Augustus M., Minnie V., Effie M., Pearl M., and Ruby.
JAMES M. DUCKWORTH was a native of Morgan County, Jefferson Township, Indiana, the son of John and Mary (Gwin) Duckworth. On November 8, 1860 he married Nancy M. Hynds, the daughter of William and Susanna Hynds. They were the parents of Ellen M., Mary B., Edward M., Susanna, Minerva G., William H., James M., and John L. Duckworth. He farmed 404 acres on which he spent most of his life.
LEWIS T. HANCOCK was a native of Anderson County, Kentucky, born May 22, 1825, of Stephen F. and Martha (Lacey) Hancock. He ,married Harriet Farley and raised seven children. Mr Hancock moved to the area in 1854 and after the death of his wife, married Emeline Fonville of Tennessee. His children are; Lorenzo D., Nancy A., Sinah R., William L., Thomas F., Mary J., and George A. Hancock.
LUKE C. KENNEDY was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, August 31, 1804, of Peter and Rachel Kennedy, both from Pennsylvania. He married Jane Blackford, daughter of William and Sarah, June 20, 1830 and then in October moved to Jefferson Township. They settled on a farm of 220 acres and raised seven children. Jane died in 1850 and after five years Luke married Isabella Hindes, daughter of William and Mary Hindes.
JAMES R. MOSIER was
the son of John and Esther (Burris) Mosier. He was born in Lawrence
County, Indiana on August 16, 1844. James enlisted in the Union Army
on August 14, 1862 and served until he was wounded at the battle of
Atone River in April 1863. He reenlisted in September and served
until January 1866. On August 28, 1868 he married the widow of David
Anderson, Mrs. Ann (Dixon) Anderson. She was the daughter of John and
Ann Dixon. Three children survived infancy, they were, Sarah R.,
James R., and Hester A. Mosier.
