Schools in the area were started around 1840. By 1850 there were five or six schools in the township.
Herbemont School was one and one-half miles south of Dobbs Crossroads. (The junction of Herbemont Road and McClure Road.) This would have put the school near the middle of the village. The lot was once surrounded by Eli Shuler's land and Ruby (Pottoroff) Shuler once taught there. The school was also known as Greenlea or Greenlee School. The name may have come from William Greenlee or his descendants. He is listed on the 1842 Poll Tax rolls. The old school was used as a community center and then a barn. All that remains of the brick structure is the foundation.
