In 1875 there were seven churches and one sabbath school listed in Ashland Township. Only three of the seven still exist.

Mount Zion Methodist Church was nearest to Herbemont. It was one-fourth mile west of Wilbur on State Road 142. The frame building burned down sometime after 1915 and the congregation commuted to Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Hall thereafter.

Poplar Grove United Methodist Church, which is north of Wilbur, was also attended by Herbemont residents and is still serving the area.

The Union Sabbath School is reported to have been three-quarters of a mile northwest of Herbemont in 1875. Levi Fowler was the superintendent and the average attendance is recorded as about 60.

Harmony Methodist Church was also near Wilbur and had a membership of 33.
