Morgan County, Indiana was formed by action of the Indiana Legislature, December 31, 1821, to become effective February 15, 1822. [ p. 715]

1822

January 1 - James Bigger commissioned Sheriff of Morgan County [Bigger was recommended for the appointment by John Tipton and Eli Dixon, but refused to accept it. He recommended Benjamin Cutler. Recommendations, Appointments, Resignations.]

January 4 - William Hadly Commissioned Surveyor Morgan Cty.

January 16 - Benjamin Cutter [Benjamin Cutler.] Commissioned Sheriff Morgan Cty. (vice James Bigger)

March 13 - Jacob Cutler commissioned Associate Judge of Morgan County.

March 13 - John Gray commissioned Associate Judge of Morgan County.

March 13 - George H. Beeler commissioned Clerk and Recorder of Morgan County. [ p. 210]

July 2 - Samuel Scott commissioned Justice Peace Morgan Cty

[August 10 - The returns of sheriff and coroner were made on the same sheet with the Congressional returns in a number of other counties. This may account for the fact no commissions were recorded for a number of these offices. Returns have been found for a number of these offices. Returns have been found for the following officers elected in August 1822: -- Morgan County, Thomas L. Galpin, sheriff; John Tiffany, coroner (commissions issued September 13 according to the endorsement on the returns); -- In addition the endorsement on the Morgan County return shows John Matthews was commissioned trustee of the public seminary on September 13, 1822. September 1 - Samuel Jessup commissioned a Justice of peace

1824

August 7 - Isaiah Drury commissioned a justice of the peace for Morgan County.

September 8 - Samuel Scott commissioned Coroner.

September 8 - Thomas Galpin commissioned Sherriff.

December 2 - Samuel Reed commisioned Associate judge of the Circuit court ... Vice John Gray resigned. [Gray's resignation as associate judge was filed with the clerk of Morgan County on July 7, 1824. Reed was elected on November 8. Election Returns, July and November, 1824.]

1825

February 24 - Benjamin Cutler is commissioned a justice of the peace.

March 3 - Thomas Reed is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 21 - Jesse S. Rooker is commissioned a justice of the peace.

[June 30] - Robert C. Stotts is commissioned a justice of the peace. [Robert C. Stotts was commissioned on June 30, 1825, according to an endorsement on the return of his election. Ibid., June, 1825.]

1826

June 12 - William G. Lear is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 12 - Barclay Burris is commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 14 - John Matthews is commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 14 - Abraham Fletcher is commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 18 - George A. Phelps commissioned Sherriff.

August 18 - Samuel Scott commissioned Coroner.

[March 23] - Writ is issued requiring the election of an associate judge ... on the 1st Monday in January next vice Samuel Reed removed. [Reed, wrote the sheriff on November 13, 1826, had left the county - "last winter" for New Orleans - and had not returned, leaving the county greatly inconvenienced for want of a second associate judge. Recommendations, Appointments, Resignations.]

24 - Samuel Wick is commissioned a justice of the peace.

1827

January 12 - Jared Olds commissioned Associate Judge of the circuit court Vice Samuel Reed resigned.

March 17 - David Burnes is commissioned a justice of the peace.

March 23 - William Hadley is appointed Surveyor.

March 23 - Writ is issued requiring the election of an associate judge ... vice Jacob Cutler resigned.

April 14 - Charles Vertrees is commissioned a justice of the peace.

May 5 - James Burnes commissioned an associate judge vice Jacob Cutler resigned.

May 26 - William Sanders [William Landers. Election Returns, May, 1827.] is commissioned a justice of the peace

May 26 - Cyrus Wetzel commissioned a justice of the peace.

May 26 - Ephraim Goss commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 1 - Samuel Scott [According to an election return from Morgan County, and its endorsement, two other justices, Benjamin Bull and David G. Worth, were elected on September 9, 1827, and commissioned on October 8. Ibid., September 1827.] commissioned a justice of the peace.

December 1 - Grant Stafford commissioned a justice of the peace.

1828

February 5 - Henry Rats is commissioned a justice of the peace.

February 5 - Daniel Withers is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 20 - Abraham Lafevre is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 20 - Solomon Dunagin is commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 14 - Thomas L. Galpin is commissioned Sheriff.

August 14 - Samuel Scott is commissioned Coroner.

August 14 - George A Phelps is commissioned Clerk & Recorder and James Burnes and Hiram Matthews associate judges of the Circuit Court of Morgan county, their term of service to commence on the fifteenth day of March next.

August 18 - John Matthews is commissioned Probate Judge.

November 27 - William Wilcox is commissioned a justice of the peace.

1830

June 22 - Bernard Arnold is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 22 - Thomas Hudiburgh is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 22 - James Crawford is commissioned a justice of the peace.

August 10 - William H. Craig is commissioned Sheriff.

August 10 - Samuel Scott is commissioned Coroner.

September 23 - Mordecai D. Miller is commissioned a justice of the peace. [On the return reporting Miller's election. Allen Roden (Roaden) was also reported elected a justice of the peace. Ibid. September, 1830.]

October 2 - David G. Worth is commissioned a justice of the peace. [Worth was elected justice of the peace vice James H. Lyons, resigned. Ibid. September 1830.]

1831

February 23 - David Weathers is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 14 - Francis Whicher is commissioned a justice of the peace. [ On the return with Whitcher's (Whicker's) election for Brown Township, Robert Ervin was also reported elected a justice of the peace for Jefferson Township. Ibid. 1831, Ervin's commission is not recorded.]

August 16 - William Burnet is commissioned a justice of the peace.

September 22 - George W. Baker is commissioned a justice of the peace.

December 19 - William Cox is commissioned a justice of the peace.

1832

April19 - Daniel Vest is commissioned a justice of the peace. [Vest was elected vice William Lambert, resigned. Ibid. April, 1832. No record of Lambert's election and commission has been found.]

June 12 - Johnson Burris is commissioned a justice of the peace.

June 23 - James Newton is commissioned a justice of the peace> [On the return reporting the election of Newton for Jefferson Township, David Burnes was reported elected a justice of the peace for Washington Township. Ibid. June, 1832. Burnes's commission is not recorded.]

August 13 - James W. Hays is commissioned a justice of the peace. [Hays succeeded Cyrus Wetzel. Ibid., August, 1832.]

August 13 - William H. Craig commissioned Sheriff.

August 13 - William Wilson commissioned Coroner

October 2 - Scott W. Young is commissioned a justice of the peace.

1833

February 25 - Joel Bean is commissioned a justice of the peace. [Bean was elected justice of the peace vice Robert Ervin, removed. Election Returns, February, 1833.]

March 2 - A Writ is issued for the election of a Clerk to fille the vacancy Occasioned by the death of George A. Phelps, to be held on the 1st Monday of April next. [Phelps died on February 23, 1833, according to a notice sent by the sheriff to Governor Noble. Recommendations, Appointments, Resignations.]

April 8 - Hannibal R. Stevens is Commissioned Clerk of the Circuit Court, vice George A. Phelps , deceased, for seven years from 15th of March 1829.

April 8 - Thomas McCarty is Commissioned Justice of the peace for sd cty.

April 8 - Charles B. Butler is Commissioned Justice of the peace for sd cty.

April 8 - Grant Stafford is Commissioned Justice of the peace for sd cty.

June 1 - Isaac D. Huffman is commissioned a Justice of the Peace of Morgan county.-

July 12 - Jacob Seachrist is commissioned a Justice of the Peace of Morgan county.-

August 13 - John J. Graham is commissioned Recorder for 7 years from this date vice George A Phelps, deceased--

August 17 - The certificate of the resignation of John Matthews Probate Judge is filed . [Matthews resigned on August 13, 1833. Ibid., and Benjamin Bull is appointed and Commissioned in his stead until the 1st Monday in Augt next.]

October 4 - William Scott is Commissioned a Justice of the Peace.

October 4 - Andrew Shell is Commissioned a Justice of the Peace.

October 4 - Henry W. Brazeale is Commissioned a Justice of the Peace.

December 5 - Joseph Summers is Commissioned a Justice of the Peace.
