Jail Division

The new maximum security jail was built in 1991 to replace the outdated jail on Washington Street that was built to hold 54 inmates. The new facility houses an average of 180 prisoners each day and has a maximum capacity of 199. This facility is able to hold every type of prisoner from suspected murderers and other violent felons to those charged with civil contempt. Prisoners are also held for the U.S. Marshal's Service and the Indiana Department of Correction.The jail employees up to 40 staff members.   For jail/inmate visitation hours call  342-4303

Communications

The Communications Division consists of a Chief of Communications, eight Dispatchers and four Control Operators.

Reserve Deputies

The Reserve Division consists of up to forty members who volunteer their time to help both the citizens and Sheriff of Morgan County. The department educates and trains these volunteers to work the same as the Merit Deputies. The reserves are all sworn officers and have the same police powers as any other officer.

Over 750 calls for service originate from this facility each month. In addition to these calls the Deputies have 890 miles of county roads to patrol.

The County-wide Enhanced 9-1-1 service equipment has been installed. The 9-1-1 service will allow us to identify the address of the caller even if the caller is unable to speak. We are very excited that we provide this valuable service to the citizens of Morgan County.

     Many improvements and equipment updates have been made since 1995 among them are:

• Video Imaging System, System - allows Jail Officers to have a picture of an inmate immediately with out the delay of sending the film off for costly developing. Also this system is used by our Detectives to arrange photo line-ups for the identification of criminal suspects.
• Report Transcription System allows officers to call in reports.
• Live Scan Fingerprint System - fingerprints are scanned with allow Jail Officers to view the print before printing to obtain the best possible fingerprints of criminal suspects. Fingerprints taken with this system can be sent electronically to Indianapolis to positively identify persons who use assumed names within minutes.
• New Filing System - sliding files taking less space than the normal file cabinets used to hold all inmate file records of past arrests.

All of the above were purchased with alternate funding and did not require the use of tax dollars!

• Stop Sticks - tool used to deflate the tires of fleeing suspect vehicles safely, making most pursuits a thing of the past.
• In Car Video Cameras - used to tape drunk driving suspects to record their actions and driving for use in Jury trials.  
• Light Bars - all marked vehicles now have top lighting to make vehicles more visible and offer greater safety for the deputies.
• K-9 Units - the department now has two trained K-9 units to be used to search buildings and vehicles. The one dog is trained to sniff out drugs and can be used to help locate lost people. (The department has one of only three dogs in the State of Indiana trained in searching for explosives.)
• Neighborhood Crime Watch Programs - Each township has been introduced to this program and several are very active.

Permits may be renewed up to 180 days before the expiration of your current permit.
You must live outside city or town limits to get your permit at the Sheriffs Dept.
