The Police Department was organized in 1884 with John Fulford serving as the first police chief with two full-time officers.  The rate of pay was recorded as $1.50 per day for the patrolmen and Chief Fulford at $2.25 per day.
Today's Police Department has eighteen (21) full-time officers, six (7) telecommunicators (All full-time), and six (9) reserve officers.   The Department's jurisdiction is approximately 12 square miles.
Each full-time officer has a "take-home" vehicle. He/she is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the vehicle which is paid by the city. These vehicles last us at an average of six years, and are then replaced.
The department presently has a D.A.R.E. program, K-9 program, Clothe-a Child program, and a gun safety seminar given to citizens of Martinsville which is a four (4) hour block of instruction taught by department members that are state certified instructors.
