Traditional: English Barn

One of the most common barn types in Morgan County, the English barn was brought to New England and the Chesapeake Bay regions by English immigrants, and then carried to the Midwest by later settlers.

Rectangular in plan and timber framed, the English barn was commonly separated into three bays. The major entrance is located not on the barn's gable end but on its long side. The entrance is centered and consists of double doors. The center bay or aisle was used as a threshing area, with side bays used as grain storage. The English barn was typically covered with vertical siding and had few windows.
