Day Five: Drawing Roof Styles on the Computer
Author: Kathryn Maxwell
Grade Level: Art Class Grade 8
Indiana Educational Standards: Visual Arts Standards 8
(Production)
8.8.2
Rationale: Students enjoy working with computers.
Students are curious about drawing programs on computers. Drawing objects helps
one remember words and symbols. Therefore, students can enjoy drawing
architectural structures on a computer paint program.
8.8.1
Preparation: The teacher will reserve the computer
lab for one class period. The computers will have the "Paint" program installed.
The instructor will make one copy per student of the "Roof Styles" handout.
8.8.2
Objective: To familiarize students with four
architectural roof styles. Students will be able to use the "paint" program on
the computer to successful draw four architectural roof styles
8.8.1
Introduction: The instructor will review briefly
where one finds the four roof styles: mansard on the Second Empire style, hipped
on an Italianate building, Gabled on classical architecture and on most of the
buildings in their hometown, and gambrel on Dutch Colonial houses and dairy
barns.
8.8.2
Activity: The instructor will take students to the
computer lab and hand out the computer generated "Roof Styles" handout. The
instructor will demonstrate step-by-step how to draw the mansard, hipped, gable,
and gambrel roof using the computer "Paint" program. The students will then draw
and label the four roof styles. When finished, the student will save his/her
drawing on a floppy disk or into their assigned personal folder in the lab. The
student will make a hard copy of all their computer generated architectural
structures and turn it in to the instructor.
