Day Twelve: Finishing Details

Author: Kathryn Maxwell
Grade Level: Art Class Grade 8
Indiana Education Standards

Visual Arts Standards 10 (Production)

 8.10.3

Rationale: Students take pride in seeing their artwork displayed in the school showcases.

 8.10.1

Preparation: Clear counter space on two or three large student tables. Have ready 30 sheets of 12”x18” black construction paper, one or more paper cutters, a dozen glue sticks, 30 1”x 2” white blank nametags, a large display board, several black pens for labeling artwork, and a stapler and/or masking tape.

 8.18.1, 8.10.2, 8.10.3

Objectives:  After watching the teacher demonstration on the proper use of a paper cutter:

  1. The student will trim artwork so that all four corners are square (90 degrees).
  2. The student will mount and label their two-dimensional artwork on 12”x 18”black construction paper with a glue stick.
  3. After stapling mounted artwork on a large display board, the students will critique each other’s work using at least five architectural terms to describe the work.
  4. The student will make positive criticism and constructive comments about another student’s work.
  5. The student will compare and contrast two works describing the use of guidelines, vanishing points, architectural adornment terms, architectural styles, and roof styles.

 8.10.1

Introduction:

Today, we will learn the proper use of a paper cutter, and how to measure and trim square corners. Next, we will learn how to mount and label our drawings onto black paper. Then, we will staple the works onto the display area and critique each other’s artwork.

 8.9.3, 8.10.1, 8.10.2

Activity:

The teacher will demonstrate the proper use and hazards of using a paper cutter. He or she will demonstrate how to trim a student drawing by squarely trimming the top, bottom, and sides of the art, using the grid on the cutter’s surface as a guide, and being careful not to cut off any of the artwork. The teacher will show the students how to mount artwork squarely using a glue stick on the back corners, top, sides, and bottom of the art. The teacher will show students how to print their first and last name on a 1” x 2” white piece of paper, and where to attach the nametag at the bottom right side of the mounted artwork. As students finish mounting and labeling their artwork, they will staple their work, at the top only, onto the display board. At this time students are to study each other’s work and begin thinking about their critique. They must pick at least five architectural terms to describe another student’s drawing.  They must analyze how the other student’s work was executed. Students are to make constructive comments about each other’s work. After all the drawings are stapled to the display board, the teacher and students will gather to begin the critiquing process. Evaluation points are given to students as they critique each other’s work. A participation point is given each time the student correctly uses an architectural term to describe a work and each time the student compares one work’s attributes to another work.
