NOTE: You will need MacTCP 2.0.6 or Open Transport installed on your system to use the SCICAN software. These items come with MacOS System 7.5 and higher. If you have an earlier version of MacOS, you can obtain MacTCP directly from Apple or from software packages such as the Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh.
Close all open programs and windows running on your Macintosh.
Place the Mac Starter Disk V5.2 disk into the drive.
Double-click on Click Me To Start icon that appears. This will copy items onto your computer.
If your Macintosh responds by displaying an Applescript not installed error or any other type of Applescript error, please call SCICAN Technical Support for further assistance.
A Select Destination Folder dialog box will appear. Click on the Extract button in the dialog box.
Double-click on the new SCICAN folder on your hard drive.
Double-click on the Install Settings icon. Type in your first and last name and your SCICAN username (i.e. jsmith@scican.net).
Double-click on the Install FreePPP2.5v3 icon. Keep clicking on Next button until the install is complete. Click OK on any dialog box that appears and Restart when the installation is complete.
When your computer restarts, you will notice a new icon of a phone in the upper-right hand corner of your screen. This is called the PPP Menu. Click on the icon, activating a pull down menu, and select Open FreePPP setup.
Click on Accounts Tab, then click on the edit button. A window with another three tabs will appear.
For NUMBER, enter the appropriate SCICAN dialup number (349-5840). If you have call waiting type *70, in front of the number.
For IPUSERNAME, type in your username with the 1 (i.e. jsmith1@scican.net). For Password, type in your SCICAN password.
Click OK. Click the close box on the FreePPP setup window.
Your
system is now set-up to use SCICAN.
Choose the Open PPP Connection selection from the PPP Menu (phone icon in upper-right hand corner of screen).
You are now connected to the Internet, and you are ready to use the other programs in the SCICAN folder to explore the Internet, retrieve e-mail, and download other programs using the get icons provided.
To disconnect, select Close PPP Connection from the PPP Menu.
